China added 16.2 million Internet users in the first quarter of 2009 to reach a total of 316 million, including 117.6 million mobile Internet users, reported by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). China had 298 million Internet users in early January, up from 290 million in November 2008, according to China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) statistics.
By March 2009, China had 670 million mobile phone users and 340 million fixed-line subscribers. There were a total of 980 million fixed-line and mobile telephone subscribers before December 2008, according to MIIT.
China had a total of 16 million domain names and 2.88 million websites in 2008. The domestic e-commerce market grew 41.7% year-on-year in 2008 to about RMB 3 trillion, while online ads rose 55.8% year-on-year to RMB 12 billion and online gaming grew about 50% year-on-year to RMB 19-20 billion in 2008.
