China Unicom plans to release the WCDMA network in selected areas on May 1 and cover 248 cities by the end of the year. WCDMA would launch on May 17 and cover 282 cities before the end of the year.
Unicom plans to give Apple certain rewards after securing the iPhone, including purchasing a fixed amount of the phones and pre-installing the Apple iTunes store. Rumors in mid-February said Unicom began testing the iPhone in Henan and Hebei provinces two weeks earlier.

Hi Lisa,
This is exciting new about Apple and China Unicom. You mentioned in your post that the deal includes "purchasing a fixed amount of the phones and pre-installing the Apple iTunes store." I would be very interested in following up on source info. Did this info come from inside sources or from reports on blogs? Thanks for any further information you can share.
I read a report (rumor) that China Unicom executives were coming to Cupertino, CA USA in March to meet with Apple.
