China Telecom To Issue New Mobile Numbers

China Telecom plans to release mobile numbers starting with 189- in November and complete the acquisition of China Unicom's 42 million CDMA users within three months. The company plans to operate the new numbers under its "Tian Yi" brand.

Market rumors are saying that China Telecom may discontinue PHS business in 2009. China Telecom manager Wang Xiaochu predicted in June that one-third of Telecom's PHS users would remain after the CDMA takeover. China Telecom completed the purchase of Unicom's CDMA business on October 1.

China Telecom has received new licenses to expand basic telecom and value-added services. The company is now certified to operate CDMA, satellite communications and satellite transponder businesses and authorized to conduct Internet data center and virtual private network services in 21 southern cities and provinces and offer information service in 10 northern provinces.
